As long as something can be considered full of worth, you can pay for it with money. The only way to obtain that intangible value is to experience it directly. You cannot learn something or gain wisdom through reading or memorizing books or listening to lectures.

If you want knowledge, you must apply yourself directly so you can obtain it firsthand through your own experiences. This is what I believe the quote means: nothing really has value until you experience it personally and thus acquire the true meaning behind it. For example, if you learn about a new religion or philosophy, there is no real reason to believe those beliefs are true because you have not experienced them yourself.

If you want to understand those beliefs from those who have experienced those things directly, then you must make the effort to go out and experience those things first hand."
